Land Use, 2016
The speculation in properties and land--landscape converted into an object of barter--is one of the physical features of the contemporary border city of Tijuana, defined historically by migration and by tourism. Land Use is a project that engages with the transformations in urban landscape in the Zona Norte of Tijuana, home of the famous Black Legend that has made Tijuana an infamous border city. Economic interests--international developers in collusion with city government--have radically transformed the face of Tijuana. The land is sold off to the highest bidder, and land use is adjusted to their convenience. Drawing upon the tradition of New Topographics, my project produces new representations of Tijuana: departing from the iconography of prostitution, bars and silly tourist traps to hint at the economic forces driving this economy from below.

La especulación sobre la tierra, convertida en objeto de venta y lugar de construcción, es uno de los rasgos de la ciudad fronteriza contemporánea, definida históricamente por los flujos migratorios y el turismo. Este proyecto aborda esta condición y los efectos que los desarrollos urbanos tienen en el paisaje de la ciudad y su representación. Basado en la tradición de New Topographics, este proyecto busca producir una nueva representación de Tijuana, una ciudad definida por la Leyenda negra, la ciudad de vicio. Las fotos visualizan los efectos en el paisaje de las fuerzas económicas y esta mano invisible.
