Traces: photographs of the border wall 2009-2012
The photographs in “Traces” focus on the ruins of the first walls between Baja California and San Diego, made of metal military aircraft landing mats, now painted on, stained, rusting and falling apart. I take my photographs on my walks along the wall. The photographs are closeup shots, like portraits, that invite the viewer to get close and view the textures, the holes and marks on the surface of the metal, and the messages and inscriptions that migrants have left as they crossed the border. Drawings, names, messages of love and longing for the home and family left behind. Situated between documentary and archaeology, my project expresses an impulse and practice of counter-surveillance, to see and bear witness to acts hidden by the U.S. government. The photographs play with an intrinsic ideological tension in the wall, as an emblem of the power of the state: they project an appearance of power and protection, but their very existence reveals the inherent vulnerability of the state.
Rastros: fotografías del muro fronterizo 2009-2012
Las fotos de “Rastros” abordan el tema de los espacios ocupados por migrantes frente la barda fronteriza. Ahora, esta barda es una ruina. Los primeros muros entre Baja California y San Diego fueron construidos por el gobierno estadounidense en 1990 de un material bellica, de lamina de acero usado en la guerra de Viet Nam. Ahora están rayados, oxidados y derrumbando. Yo tomo mis fotos en caminatas en el cerro a un lado del muro; son tomas de primer plano, como de retrato, que invita al espectador a acercarse a ver las texturas, los huecos y manchas en la superficie y los mensajes y inscripciones que han dejado los migrantes que pasaron por el muro fronterizo, dibujos, nombres, y otros mensajes. Situado entre documental y arqueología, mi proyecto emanó de un impulso de la contra vigilancia, de ver y de dar testigo a los hechos ocultados del gobierno estadounidense. Las fotos juegan con una tensión ideológica intrínseca del muro, tal como una muestra del poder del estado: desde una distancia, proyectan una monumentalidad y la apariencia de solidez, de protección, pero su propia existencia muestra vulnerabilidad.
